Matthew McGann

  • Artist / Junior Architect

Highly professional, motivated and versatile architectural designer with an eye for detail and an international source of experience and skills.

I am a Junior Architect and an independent multi-media artist (primarily in painting, drawing, and sculpture). Born in Kingston, Jamaica in 1991, I moved to New York City in 2010 and received my BA in Architecture from Pratt Institute. I am currently a Junior Architect at Radoslav Opacic Architects in Irvington, NY. My interdisciplinary career allows me to express my passion for design, art and creativity that emerged early in my life. My training in architecture fostered technical and theoretical competencies (sociological, cultural, and political) that informs the content and form of his practice. In my current position at Radoslav Opacic Architects, I have several responsibilities such as creating and organizing the technical drawings for construction, preparing the schematic design presentations through digital and hand-drawn means, and assisting with administrative responsibilities within the office and with members of the construction team.

My artwork focuses on the relationship between form and function. This approach contributes to and draws from my architectural practice in which I am committed to exploring the interrelationship between subjects and the materiality of the spaces they occupy. My creative practice uses diverse material and design elements to re-narrate objects or moments in time that have personal significance. This process of re-narration provides an opportunity for two different kinds of exploration. First, it allows me to re-symbolize and re-purpose the object or moment – creating new meanings and functions for myself and for audience members. Second, it facilitates an exploration of materials – individually and in relationship to one another – and the opportunity to play with contrast and tension – dark vs. light, solid vs. translucent vs. transparent. This re-narrative approach is the central methodology that informs my creative practice. I use it to craft a stream-lined aesthetic in producing re-narrations in simple but strong and deliberate forms and shapes.
